Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Review

Game Name: Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Developer:  Alpha Dream Publisher:  Nintendo Platform: Nintendo 3DS Release Date: 1/22/2016 Price: $39.99/£27.80 Genre: Action, Role-Playing ESRB Rating: E

A download code for the game was provided by the publisher for this review.

AlphaDream’s previous title Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, released in a very crowded year of Mario-related titles, was a huge breath of fresh air for a series that started to feel a bit stale. That twist on the formula of offering the fully-realized cartoony RPG experience that began way back with the mythical Super Mario RPG cross focused 2D-platformer sequences made for a full menu of dynamic [...]

Nicole Seraphita’s Games of the Year 2015

2015 was a hell of a year for gaming, with AAA and indie games alike producing some of the finest titles we’ve seen in years. But honestly, I haven’t played most of the games that will likely appear on my fellow journalists Games of the Year lists. So what did I play? A whole bunch of JRPGs, doujin games, and other small scale stuff, my favorite of which you can read about below.

(In no particular order.)

1. Undertale (PC)

Few games this year have garnered as much praise as this little homage to quirky JRPGs of years past, and with good reason as well. As Undertale is a game that simply sucks in players with its mix of quirky humor, strange [...]

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson Review

Developer: Tamsoft Publisher: Marvelous Platform: Nintendo 3DS Release Date: September 15, 2015 Price: $49.99

The publisher provided a retail code of the game for this review.

Ninja Waifus Await You

Senran Kagura is a series often vilified for its rampant fanservice at the expense of most critics focusing on the jiggle and less on the gameplay. Jim Sterling, for example, recently blew up the most recent entry, Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson, in a “review” simply for having a lot of large chests in it. An entire write-up based, mostly, on jokes about mammaries. They were, admittedly, funny in parts, but it failed to offer a critique of the game. This [...]

Atlus Announces Shin Megami Tensei 4: Final

In a move that will likely soothe the hearts of SMT fans still reeling from Persona 5’s delay. Atlus today announced that Shin Megami Tensei 4: Final, a game directly related to the 2013 3DS RPG Shin Megami Tensei 4,  will hit Japanese stores on February 10th. The reveal came via a rather cryptic message on the game’s official site which boasted that a “disaster” would occur once a message from Atlus was retweeted 15,000 times.

Shovel Knight: Plague Of Shadows Review

Title: Shovel Knight: Plague Of Shadows Developer: Yacht Club Games Publisher: Yacht Club Games Release Date: September 17 Price: Free Update Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, 3DS, PC

Bomb’s Away!

Shovel Knight has quickly become one of the most popular and beloved games of the last two years since its initial release. This is due mostly in part to its charming NES sprite art style and Mega Man/Mario inspired gameplay. It’s one of my all-time favorite games and now an all new free update has been released. This update entitled Plague Of Shadows sets a new standard for how free DLC should be developed for games in the future.

The best part of this new [...]

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX Review

Title: Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX Developer: SEGA Publisher: SEGA Platform: Nintendo 3DS Release Date: September 8th, 2015 Price: $39.99

The publisher provided a product code for the purposes of this review.

Well, at this point, you’re either a Hatsune Miku person or you’re not. The above image goes a long way in determining whether or not Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX for the Nintendo 3DS is your jam or not. Do you like Vocaloid music? Do you find the Nendodroid-style chibi characters far too “kawaii” to ignore? Do I sound like a tool for putting kawaii in quotes? If all of the above answers are a definitive “Yes!” [...]

Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Fafnir Knight Review

Title: Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Fafnir Knight Developer: Atlus Publisher: Atlus USA Platform: Nintendo 3DS Price: $49.99

The publisher provided a product code for the purposes of this review.

It is no secret that I love JRPGs. My past reviews of them on this very site can attest to that. There is a particular sub-genre of JRPGs that scratches an itch I can’t quite get anywhere else: the dungeon crawler. It’s something that is universal and timeless, yet as niche as can be. Enter the Etrian Odyssey series. It has done more for the first-person dungeon crawler genre than perhaps any other aside from the progenitors Wizardry and the sort. Japan loves them [...]
