Detroit is the new title just announced at Paris Games Week by Quantic Dream. It will star the android character shown in an E3 2012 tech demo known as Kara. What details have surfaced of the story point to it focusing upon Kara and her newly emerging human emotions. It will also focus on her escape from the factory she was created in and what lies ahead for her in the real world.
Other details surrounding the story point to a futuristic world inhabited by androids and humans alike. Kara would be the first of her kind to show human emotion. The developers stressed how the game would focus on emotion and the discovery of emotion to someone who has never experienced it before. [...]
As the PlayStation 3 enters its twilight years, the number of big name games for it has slowed to a near standstill. But fortunately for RPG fans who have yet to invest in a next generation console, there are still plenty of titles coming down the pipe that promise epic quests and dozens of hours of cut-scenes and monster slaying. While most of these games are new entries in franchises — that are decades old at this point, such as Persona 5, Star Ocean 5, and Tales of Zesteria, a handful of original games yet remain in the PS3’s near future. Today we will be talking about just such a game in Lost Dimension, a tactical RPG developed by Japanese game company Furyu and published [...]
I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play on a level of the upcoming entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. While I was playing, a developer from Ubisoft walked me through the level and pointed out the design changes and new features they added to the game, which were numerous and readily apparent.
The preview level was shown at the Ubisoft booth, which was arranged in a semi-circle of large displays, PS4s, and headphones. I have played all the previous Assassin’s Creed games on the Xbox, so adjusting to the feel of the controls on the PS4 was a small challenge, even though they’re very close to the same. Once I got a [...]
Buried in the far corner of the Nintendo booth this year was a gem I hadn’t heard about – Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. Mario Tennis has always been a fun, casual entry in the Nintendo lineup, and I was intrigued if they’d made any significant changes to the Wii U version of the franchise. Nintendo did not disappoint!
I played against another convention-goer as Bowser, facing off against his Mario. Ultra Smash has thrown in the addition of power-ups to Mario Tennis, and while there was only one on display in this version of the game – the mega mushroom – it was still a nice quirk of the gameplay. Occasionally a mega mushroom would be thrown into the court from the side, and it [...]
The House of Wolves expansion for Destiny dropped on May 19, and we’ve been playing it since. People have been upset about the lack of raids this time round, but there’s still enough for players to sink their teeth into. We thought we’d delve into it a bit for our readers.
The Reef—the brand new social area, is the primary focus of House of Wolves. Players have been invited by the Queen of the Awoken—the one that helps the Guardian access the Black Garden, to the Reef. The Queen needs the help of the Guardians to track down one of her rogue lieutenants, who has betrayed her and sought to take over the “House of Wolves”. Obviously there are new [...]
This week’s Spotlight focuses on what could be a truly ambitious title from South Korean developer Neostream. It is hack-n-slash meets action RPG meets well a lot of things. Let’s take a look at the gorgeous Little Devil Inside. The Truth Is Out There
Little Devil Inside appears to be an action RPG with elements of titles like Dark Souls, The Legend of Zelda and more. The crux of the story will rely upon our hero teaming up with a professor who wishes to seek out the paranormal, find it, catalog it and, if necessary, take it out. This leads to a mission-driven structure that can be adhered to but, as the developers say:
Although guided by a multiple [...]
If you’ve been living under a rock for a while now you might not be aware of what will, without a doubt, be one of the biggest releases of 2015. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt promises to be epic in scale, hoping to deliver on the promise of a truly open fantasy world that is grounded in realism. CD Projekt RED has a proven track record of doing just that with the prior entries in the franchise (based on the immensely popular Polish fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski). The prior games have been known for their immense open landscapes, mature themes and stellar gameplay. This latest gameplay trailer showcases just how much there is to in the world of Witcher 3 along with summarizing, [...]
Mildly Competent Games, a two-man development team based out of San Francisco, has taken to the tumultuous seas of Kickstarter to launch a 16-bit pirate adventure with rogue-like tendencies, RTS combat and sea shanties aplenty! Encounters are randomly crafted and procedurally selected and make every playthrough different depending on the choices made. The seas that would-be pirate crews will trek across are procedurally generated as well. There is an entire world of loot to be plundered, factions to be won over and quests to complete. This is Seaworthy.
The game, which has been accepted by the Steam Greenlight community, [...]
Wolf Brew Games, comprised of two industry veterans with prior experience with studios such as Naughty Dog, Rockstar, Frozen Codebase and 3D0, has been quietly developing their homage to the 2D hack-and-slash games of the past, Slain!. The campaign serves to cover the cost of finishing the PC version (releasing in May) of the game along with a PS Vita coming in September and a PS4 port. The game, at first glance, appears to be yet another [...]
Kickstarter has its ups and downs, sure, but there are projects that showcase the ingenuity and DIY ethos of small developers to a tee. Strength of the SWORD ULTIMATE is one of those projects. The two-man team over at Ivent Games (Lyubo and Georgi) wanted to build the sort of “old school” brawler that the market sees little of anymore, though they quickly learned they were in over their heads. The penultimate edition seeks to expand on the existing version, Strength of the SWORD 3. The “3” in the title refers to the developer’s idea that they want to finish their trilogies “right off the bat”. No first or second game needed in this [...]
