20GB isn’t necessarily a large size for a video game at this point in time, but a 10GB update on the very first day of release is pretty large for the upcoming release of Sniper Elite 3 for Xbox One.
On day one of release, developer Rebellion will be replacing nearly three quarters of the original install–clocking in at just over 14GB–in a mandatory update.
Which begs the question: Why?
“The main part of the update is to sync data between the game’s retail discs and the Xbox Live digital download edition of the game. In the several weeks between sending the code off to manufacture and release, rather than sit around or take a break, we’ve continued to work on the game, making improvements and optimisations.
“We’ve also begun work on multiplayer DLC and a small part of this update is to introduce a compatibility pack. This is standard for any game that adds DLC – it’s just to make sure everyone can have the same multiplayer experience whether they own DLC or not,” says Rebellion.
Honestly, that makes a lot of since. It’s odd to see and maybe a little annoying for people with slow internet connections, but it’s nice to know that they would rather continue to improve their product then let it fall behind or get delayed.
Overall, it’s exciting to see Sniper Elite 3 make it to next gen consoles, and this minor pip in the progress of the game’s release is nothing compared to the awesome look that it will have.
