Xbox Entertainment Studios Closed

Shortly after Microsoft announced they were laying off 18,000 employees, many of those from the recent Nokia acquisition, they also announced the immediate closing of Xbox Entertainment Studios. This entertainment driven wing was just created in 2012 with the main purpose of creating original television content to compete with the likes of Netflix and Hulu, but was deemed unnecessary as the new CEO, Satya Nadella tries to streamline the company’s focus.

Questions revolve around the mortality of two eagerly anticipated projects already in the works: Halo: Nightfall and a Halo TV series produced by Steven Spielberg. You can take a breath and relax- at this time both projects will continue production with (Halo developer) 343 Industries. After the announcement, Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer issued a memo confirming their plans to continue with original programming.

“Xbox will continue to support and deliver interactive sports content like ‘NFL on Xbox,’ and we will continue to enhance our entertainment offering on console by innovating the TV experience through the monthly console updates. Additionally, our app partnerships with world-class content providers bringing entertainment, sports and TV content to Xbox customers around the world are not impacted by this organizational change in any way and remain an important component of our Xbox strategy.”

As much as they try to reassure everyone they are still behind their original content planning. It appears they are jumping ship before it’s had much chance to flourish. Do you think they are just trying to cut costs where they can and still produce everything as originally promised, or do you think they are cutting their losses while they can before the costs add up?

Our thoughts are with all those affected by these cuts. Let us know your opinion below and be sure to follow us @APGNation to stay on top of gaming related news.

My name is Felicia but many just call me Lixx or Scilixx. I’ve been a gamer since I could sit up and play Asteroids on Atari. I became hooked immediately and have had a longterm love affair with video games. Of course, Atari wasn’t enough for me. I branched out into every generation after that. I still own them all, over 20 different working consoles. To quote Gollum, they are “my precious.” But I will admit, lately I have become a very healthy member of the PC Master Race. Do not despair, I’m not really much of a fan-girl to anything in particular. I like anything that gives me enjoyment. Whether its on a PC, console, handheld or even phone, I don’t care. I will play it. Currently some of my favorite games include Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate & Fire Emblem (3DS), Soul Sacrifice & Toukiden (PS Vita), Diablo 3 & Borderlands 2 (PC). And yes, I generally will play multiple games throughout the day. If I go without gaming for a day, stay out of my way, I will not be in a very jolly mood. Outside of gaming, I enjoy a good fantasy novel, violent tv shows (Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire), and folding origami. :3

Have your say!
