Rise of the Tomb Raider to be Xbox One Exclusive

According to GameSpot, the upcoming Rise of the Tomb Raider, the newest game in the long running Tomb Raider series, will launch exclusively on the Xbox One next year. While it had been previously assumed that the tile would be released simultaneously for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it has come to light that Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind the series, had penned an exclusive deal with Microsoft to ensure that the game would appear only on the computer giant’s latest gaming machine.

“It really was nothing against any other platform,” Phill Spencer was quoted as saying about the revelation. “It’s just looking at our portfolio next holiday and saying, this is a great game for us, and we can go really big with it. If we look back on the franchise and this release, it can raise the elevation of what it means in gaming. I’ll be happy to be part of that”.

There has been some outrage amongst the Tomb Raider fandom about the exclusivity of the new game, but Microsoft and Crystal Dynamics assures gamers that this, in the end, is all about the game and getting it into the hands of players.

“The games business today is an expensive business to be in. If you’re going to build shows like Gamescom, and IP, and marketing budgets, in certain instances a partnership is a good way for a publisher to find a way to get to the level they think they need to break out,” Phill Spencer said. “It’s crazy. If you’re one of the people who wants to make noise around the game you have, there are opportunities out there to partner with platform holders, with sponsorships and other things to make it big. This was one of those opportunities for Crystal and Square, and I think it can help take Tomb Raider and make it even bigger. We want it to be big, given what we have coming to the Xbox in the way it is”.

What do you guys think? Is buying exclusive for a company’s console a good thing for the gaming industry, as Phill Spencer seems to think it is? Let us know in the comments, or on Twitter at the usual place, @APGNation!

My name is Nicole Seraphita and I’m 27. I’ve been gaming since the days of the NES and have owned at least one system from each generation since then. My favorite type of games if most definitely RPGs, with my favorites being titles like Chrono Cross, Persona 4, and Tales of Xillia, though I also sometimes dabble in platforming games, fighting games, and visual novels. When I’m not writing for APGNation or playing games, I enjoy table top and card games, watch anime, and write fiction that I occasionally publish online. I tend to write a lot of Sci-fi and the occasional bit of fantasy, with the often overlooked sub-genre of Biopunk being my favorite. I’ve also written a few visual novels, though only one of them has made it all the way to completion thus far. My current dream is to be able to bring the Monster Girl genre to a western audience.

Have your say!
