Japanese Voice Actress Jenya reported on her Twitter account this morning that singer Origa (birth name Ol’ga Yakovleva) has passed away at the age of 44 from lung cancer. Originally born in the town of Kochenevo, Origa graduated from Novosibirsk Musical College in 1990 and traveled to Japan in 1991. It wasn’t long before Japan’s EMI Music label took notice and signed her.
Origa has had a lengthy career appearing in video game and anime soundtracks. Working alongside famed composer Yoko Kanno, Origa has performed in the original soundtracks for various anime, notably in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Fans of anime will recognize her instantly from her songs “Inner Universe” and “Rise”.
Origa’s list of works include contributions to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society, Fantastic Children, Princess Arete, ∀ Gundam: The Concert and Ao no Jidai. The Russian-born songbird also performed on numerous songs for the Korean MMO, Aion. Most recently Origa made an appearance for the vocals in Final Fantasy XIII-2 on such tracks as “Historia Crux” and along with vocals for the upcoming Koei-Tecmo title, Ao no surge: Ode to an Unborn Star. She also developed music for Korean MMO HerowarZ. Aside from her contributions to anime, Origa has also released several albums through EMI and Gemmatika Records which feature her distinct vibrato technique and open harmonization.
