Firaxis Games and 2K have officially announced today that a sequel to the turn-based strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown is under development and has been scheduled for release this November on PC.
“Firaxis proved they could re-imagine a beloved franchise with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a Game of the Year award-winning title,” said 2K President Christoph Hartmann in the statement released on the XCOM website. “With XCOM 2, the team is breathing new life into the series by adding an epic narrative and challenging players to overcome near impossible odds.”
The sequel, titled XCOM 2, will be set 20 years in a future where humanity has lost their war against the aliens and are subjugated under a new world order led by the invading extraterrestrials. The titular paramilitary organization known as XCOM has been broken and forced into hiding to continue their fight. Players will take up the remains of XCOM and fight a guerrilla war against the Advent, the new world order organization secretly controlled by the aliens, in an effort to reclaim the Earth and free humanity.
This announcement marks a drastic change in the series as for the first time the player will not be defending against alien attacks but instead orchestrating attacks against a dug-in alien threat that has near complete control of the Earth. In tandem with this massive change, the player will be operating from the Avenger, an airship that functions as the organization’s mobile headquarters.
Additionally, the game will be introducing new gameplay features along with new content for the game based on community feedback. At the moment, Firaxis Games and 2K have confirmed that the game will have five updated soldier classes, increased soldier customization, new aliens and enemies, procedurally-generated levels, and greater modding support.
“The feedback from the passionate XCOM community played an important role in the development of XCOM 2, driving us to push the visual, gameplay and replayability boundaries of what a strategy game can be,” said Jake Solomon, creative director of XCOM 2 at Firaxis Games. “We’re thrilled to implement long-time fan requested features such as procedural levels and modding support, as well as adding more of what makes XCOM great like new aliens, enemies and soldier classes.”
A teaser trailer for the upcoming game has already been released exclusively on IGN’s YouTube channel as part of the announcement on IGN First. You can watch the video below:
More details about XCOM 2, including gameplay, will reportedly be unveiled in the coming weeks, including in-game footage and further additions.
