On a recent episode of the American reality television show Keeping up with the Kardashians, the track “Dust” by M|O|O|N can be heard playing during a portion of the show. M|O|O|N is one of the many artists who provided music (including “Dust”) for the popular game Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami: Wrong Number. Reddit user megadog14 on the PC Master Race and Hotline Miami subreddits provided links for comparison. Here is a link to the portion of the show using the stolen music track, and here is the original song. A quick comparison shows it to be a distinct sped up copy of the original song.
On M|O|O|N’s official Tumblr, the artist writes that they are well aware of the stolen content:
Right yeah for those who missed it, my song ‘dust’ was used without my permission in keeping up with the kardashians s10e9. If you can find it online it happens at 4:55, and has been sped up. It’s still my song though.
And I can’t sue them, because I can’t afford it. Which the music supervisor probably knew. All in all this has largely stopped making me angry and has transitioned into being kind of funny because of the particular show it was, but it’s still kind of a bummer too.
One thing to remember, btw, which a lot of people don’t- the actual kardashians themselves had nothing to do with this. This was done by the people who make the show. So please stop sending me messages like ‘fuck those tramps’ and ‘fucking whores’. Whether you’re a fan of them or not that’s a pretty unhealthy view of women in general and I’d appreciate not having to read about it.
We reached out to M|O|O|N, Devolver Digital, and Ryan Seacrest Productions for comment on the story.
Update: M|O|O|N responded to our request for comment by stating:
I just looked at the comparison on /r/pcmasterrace, and that’s from a different episode from what I originally was notified about. I was originally talking about S10E09, this is from S10E12.
I really don’t have anything else to say about it. It sucks, but whatever. It is what it is.
