A new title in the Nier series has been announced today, during the Square Enix E3 press conference. There is no official name as of yet, and it will be PS4 exclusive.
With one of the developers bearing an outfit similar to Emil from Nier, an announcement was made. Announced by Atsushi Inaba of Platinum Games, the sequel will have Neir/Drakengard alumni Yosuke Saito and Yoko Taro behind the helm of production and directing—keeping true to the original Nier. Game design is being handled by Takahisa Taura of Platinum, known for Anarchy Reigns and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The music is being composed by Keiichi Okabe, who also worked on Nier and its spiritual predecessor, Drakengard. Joining them for character design will be Akihiko Yoshida, best known for his work on the Final Fantasy Tactics series. Atsushi Inaba of Platinum Games also stated to the crowd not to expect a strictly action oriented game, despite Platinum’s past titles.
The official trailer for this new Neir game opens with some concept art of an open green field with ruins in the middle before curring to the inside of a mechanical structure quite similar to those found in the first Neir. An elaborate sort of treehouse village is then shown before cutting a point of view concept art shot of someone in an elevator going down a massive structure. A city in ruins and overgrown with vegetation is then shown before cutting to a young woman standing by a small structure. The words Nier followed by some jumbled up mess that’s randomly changing is shown before a blurry camera pans out to reveal a young woman with white hair is dropping down in front of it. Her garment is thematically similar to Kaine—the loudmouthed secondary protagonist from the first title. The trailer has also revealed the game will be out this fall exclusively for PS4, but no further details are known.
It’s no guarantee that the mysterious woman is Kaine. She’s wearing far more clothing, however; should it turn out to be her.
