In Dawn of War III you will have no choice but to face your foes when a catastrophic weapon is found on the mysterious world of Acheron.
With war raging and the planet under siege by the armies of greedy Ork warlord Gorgutz, ambitious Eldar seer Macha, and mighty Space Marine commander Gabriel Angelos, supremacy must ultimately be suspended for survival.
So read the blurb for Relic Entertainment’s triumphant return to its treasured Dawn of War franchise.
Following yesterday’s teaser video, Relic released a longer cinematic trailer showcasing the return of the Eldar, Blood Raven Space Marines, and Orks. This should be a welcome return for fans of the original game, especially the later expansions Dark Crusade and Soulstorm, which allowed you to choose from a variety of factions for the single-player campaign.
This universe has no heroes or villains. Through alternating missions you’ll soon learn the combat advantages of Space Marines, Orks, and Eldar.
Unleash The Giants
The video also gave us a glimpse of several new additions to the franchise, such as larger mechs (Imperial Knights and what appears to be an Eldar Wraithknight). Having only previously been available through mods to the original game such as Apocalypse, it’s nice to see Relic featuring a greater range of Games Workshop’s larger models in the game. Their inclusion is confirmed on the website.
Take control of towering war machines and tip the balance of battle in your favor with the biggest characters in Dawn of War history.
What We Know
So far details are pretty sparse. We don’t have a release date or even year. We don’t have any major story details other than those mentioned above. However, in a statement, executive producer Stephen MacDonald said “This is the Dawn of War that fans have been waiting for,” adding “Our biggest units ever? Check. Giant orbital lasers? Check. Base-building, epic heroes, huge battles, it’s all in there. Get ready for the biggest Dawn of War yet. For the Emperor!” Given this, and Ibased on screenshots published by PC Gamer and the hundreds of hours I have plowed into these games, I will speculate.
First off, a 2017 launch is likely given how late into the year this announcement has come. Additionally, a PC release is almost certain, though a console curveball isn’t necessarily impossible. Also, I think we will see a return to base-building and resource collection. It was an incredibly popular aspect of the first game and its expansions and was a sorely missed element in Dawn of War II. Moreover, based on the screenshots, it is likely hero units, heavy units/walker vehicles (such as the Space Marine Dreadnaught) will also return, and I am fairly confident that the scale will be more in line with the first game given this tidbit from the website: “Prepare for more epic action as you wage war with massive armies across landscapes full of volcanic terrain or on battlecruisers in space.”
