Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Review

Developer: Spike Chunsoft Publisher:  NIS America Platform: PC (Steam) Price: $29.99

Danganronpa was reviewed due to a code received from the publisher, NIS America.

Danganronpa does something truly fascinating. It features such brutality mixed with utterly goofy antics spliced with various genres including social sims, murder mystery along with a bit of Phoenix Wright courtroom drama for good measure. If this is how good visual novels can be then it should come as no surprise that more titles are making their way across the ocean.

I’ll fully admit to being entirely new to Visual Novels. It is an oddity considering how many video games from Japanese [...]

Street Fighter V Review

Game: Street Fighter V Developer: Capcom, Dimps Publisher: Capcom Platforms: PC/PlayStation 4 Price: $59.99 Reviewed On: PlayStation 4

A code was provided by the publisher for this review.

There was a dark time in the landscape of fighting games. The genre was stagnant for what felt like ages before Capcom unleashed Street Fighter IV onto the scene. The home console release back in 2009 was equivalent to Third Impact, honestly. It was a mega-ton that bombarded the entire FGC (Fighting Game Community) and got people to pay attention to a genre of games that was, frankly, not great at the time. It is no secret that Street Fighter is the fighting game. Few other names [...]

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Review

Game Name: Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Developer:  Alpha Dream Publisher:  Nintendo Platform: Nintendo 3DS Release Date: 1/22/2016 Price: $39.99/£27.80 Genre: Action, Role-Playing ESRB Rating: E

A download code for the game was provided by the publisher for this review.

AlphaDream’s previous title Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, released in a very crowded year of Mario-related titles, was a huge breath of fresh air for a series that started to feel a bit stale. That twist on the formula of offering the fully-realized cartoony RPG experience that began way back with the mythical Super Mario RPG cross focused 2D-platformer sequences made for a full menu of dynamic [...]

Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster Review

DEVELOPER: Capcom PUBLISHER: Capcom PLATFORMS: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 PRICE: $19.99 RELEASE DATE: January 19th, 2016

The publisher provided a review code for this review.

The events of Resident Evil Zero take place a mere 24 hours before the infamous Spencer Mansion incident (Resident Evil) and introduce the classic survival formula with a twist. S.T.A.R.S. member, Rebecca Chambers, and her other teammates make an emergency landing in the woods nearby only to discover an overturned military police vehicle. Bodies are strewn about along with evidence indicating that convicted felon, Billy Coen, is lurking around. The group splits up to cover more ground and [...]

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson Review

Developer: Tamsoft Publisher: Marvelous Platform: Nintendo 3DS Release Date: September 15, 2015 Price: $49.99

The publisher provided a retail code of the game for this review.

Ninja Waifus Await You

Senran Kagura is a series often vilified for its rampant fanservice at the expense of most critics focusing on the jiggle and less on the gameplay. Jim Sterling, for example, recently blew up the most recent entry, Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson, in a “review” simply for having a lot of large chests in it. An entire write-up based, mostly, on jokes about mammaries. They were, admittedly, funny in parts, but it failed to offer a critique of the game. This [...]

Dungeon Travelers 2: The Royal Library & The Monster Seal Review

Developer: Aqua Plus Publisher: Atlus USA Platform: PS Vita Price: $39.99 Release Date: August 18, 2015

A product code was provided by the publisher for the purposes of this review.

Confession time. I have an immense soft spot for dungeon crawlers that feature great 2D artwork. It is my cross to bear. I’ll also cop to being a bit late in getting this review out as, well, I didn’t want to just finish the game’s story (that’ll take about 50 hours) but I wanted to demolish this game. I wanted to grind as I have not done in years. Even with the likes of Fafnir Knight and Tokyo Abyss under my belt this year alone I had to return to the [...]

Persona 4: Dancing All Night Review

Developer: Dingo Inc., P Studio Publisher: Atlus USA Platform: PS Vita Release Date: September 29, 2015 (NA)/November 6, 2015 (EU)

The publisher provided a product code for the purposes of this review.

Persona is a series that manages to garner mainstream attention considering the niche status of JRPGs in general. The strength of storytelling, solid gameplay, organic character development, superlative art direction and fantastic music all add up to a series, iteration after iteration, that delivers the goods. Success leads to a desire for more of the same and, instead of yet another numbered Persona release, spin-offs spring forth from the mighty one’s dome like [...]

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance Review

Title: Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance Developer: Nippon Ichi Software, Inc. Publisher: NIS America, Inc. Release Date: October 6, 2015 (NA) | October 9, 2015 (EU) Price: $59.99/£59.99 Platform: PlayStation 4

A review code was provided by the publisher, for the purposes of this review.

Let’s Take A Trip to Grind Town

Disgaea, the long-standing Strategy RPG series that has roots going all the way back to the PlayStation 2 days, puts its players through the wringer. Few gaming experiences are quite as unique as the one that the original provided me long ago. In a time when I wasn’t dealing with multiple jobs, hard pressed to find even the time to [...]

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX Review

Title: Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX Developer: SEGA Publisher: SEGA Platform: Nintendo 3DS Release Date: September 8th, 2015 Price: $39.99

The publisher provided a product code for the purposes of this review.

Well, at this point, you’re either a Hatsune Miku person or you’re not. The above image goes a long way in determining whether or not Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX for the Nintendo 3DS is your jam or not. Do you like Vocaloid music? Do you find the Nendodroid-style chibi characters far too “kawaii” to ignore? Do I sound like a tool for putting kawaii in quotes? If all of the above answers are a definitive “Yes!” [...]

Karin Revealed as the Next World Warrior in Street Fighter V

Capcom, in typical fashion, kept us waiting (well those not in the JPT time zone anyway), until the wee hours of the morning to make their latest character reveal for Street Fighter V. One might speculate that this would be a returning character considering the last reveal of Rashid at Games15 in Dubai. Well, for all the Alpha 3 fans out there who weren’t sated with the mere morsel of Rainbow Mika the venerable Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono-san took to the Tokyo Game Show main stage. Your next World Warrior? Karin Kanzuki.

First impressions? All the glorious rekkas, command grabs, one-inch punch (!) and possibly a projectile counter? [...]
