According to reports by Independent Journal Review (IJR), conservative actor Adam Baldwin has quit Twitter and doesn’t plan on returning. “Twitter is dead to me,” Baldwin told IJR yesterday. Famous for his role in Firefly and as the originator of #GamerGate, his departure comes as a response to Twitter’s ‘censorship’ of conservative voices. Baldwin told IJR that Twitter’s new policy of punishing accounts that it finds “offensive” is what drove him from the social network:
It’s really a shame that so-called ‘liberal thinkers’ and the so called ‘tolerant crowd’ is intolerant of varying viewpoints. They’re so afraid to hear people disagree with them. Instead of ignoring it or [...]
Last week I covered the announcement of #SavePoint, a Gamergate panel discussing the gaming community at SXSW (South-by-South West). I expressing that I was cautiously optimistic about the discussion; in the same way I was encouraged by SPJ Airplay, the Society of Professional Journalists’ Gamergate ethics debate. The movement has experienced increased infighting, so this panel looked to provide a focus for this discussion.
Despite being name-dropped everywhere in the speciality press, Gamergate has, for the most part, been unable to have an open discussion of its grievances outside of the internet. Consequently, following yesterday’s cancelation of both the Gamergate panel [...]
I have to admit I was a little surprised when I saw that the #SavePoint panel had been confirmed. Gamergate, even for the internet’s bogeyman, doesn’t have it easy when it comes to organising discussions—just look at what happened at SPJ Airplay in Miami this August. Bomb threats galore.
If you are unfamiliar, which is nearly impossible if you use the internet on a daily basis, Gamergate is the over-a-year-long internet controversy about ethics in video games journalism; as well as feminism, social justice, industry corruption, ‘cyber-violence’ [sic], and a whole load of other crap— depending on who you [...]

Today is the one-year anniversary of the GamerGate hashtag. Why are you here?
You’re probably anticipating some kind of celebratory gesture. Like maybe this article is going to revel in all of #GamerGate’s accomplishments. I mean, the movement did divest millions of dollars in potential ad revenue from a vertical media company. It got satirized in a Law & Order: SVU episode. Its supporters called out countless online publications for their breaches in journalistic conduct. It’s given birth to an Internet mascot and several derivative hashtags, raised dozens of gaming journalists (professional and citizen) to fame, and contributed [...]
This morning began the long-awaited event of SPJAirplay, two-panel discussions focusing on the topics related to the Gamergate hashtag controversy and movement. The morning panel discussion focused on the definition of Gamergate and then proceeded to explore examples of gaming journalism that supporters of Gamergate had ethical issues. The panel consisted of Ashe Schow, Allum Bokari, Mark Ceb, Derek Smart, Lynn Walsh, and Ren LaForme.
The discussion was by all purposes constructive, as many of the neutral attendees such as Lynn Walsh appeared sympathetic to Gamergate supporters concerns and issues. However, in regards to the larger conversation between Gamergate [...]
After being greenlit and approved for release via Steam, Afterlife Empire, the isometric strategy game with nods to Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper, and the lesser known Ghost Master, has quietly announced a release date of August 14th. The game will be initially available on PC and Mac.

The game was initially conceived by Danielle Maiorino, chosen by the Internet as winner of The Fine Young Capitalists’ Women In Gaming competition, with successful Indiegogo backing from just over 3800 supporters. Developed by Colombian [...]
April 27th marked the first day of the SPJ — Society of Professional Journalists — ethics week. A time to “recognize journalists who seek truth and report it, minimize harm, act independently, and are accountable and transparent.” Members of the amorphous online consumer revolt that gather under the hashtag banner of #gamergate wasted no time at all flooding the hashtag #SPJEthicsWeek with concerns regarding the alleged breach of ethics in many large video game publications.
Yesterday on May 4th a board member by the name of Michael Koretzky of the Society of Professional Journalism wrote about the outcry for an investigation or comment from the board. While the [...]

Last night a group of reportedly over 300 supporters of the consumer revolt, #gamergate gathered in Washington DC for drinks and festivities at the Local Sixteen bar. According to tweets and accounts of those that attended, festivities and fun continued well into the evening until about midnight when the gathering was evacuated due to an alleged bomb threat. The threat and evacuation were sadly unsurprising, as the venue had been receiving threats from the day before regarding hosting the event.
Owner of bar called me after [...]
On the morning of April 18th, the artist group known as The Honey Badger Brigade was removed from The Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo due to allegations of harassment of attendees as well as disruption of various gender-subject related panels. The details regarding exactly what happened are murky at best as social media discussions on the incident are an absolute quagmire with accusations and statements from all directions.
The Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo describes themselves as a convention for pop culture taking place in the city of Calgary, Canada. Most of the attendees and events fall in line with typical nerd culture, with categories surrounding comics [...]
Wednesday night featured the eagerly anticipated Law and Order: Special Victims Unit episode “Intimidation Game”, loosely based on a trending topic in the gaming community: misogyny in the gaming community. Surprising absolutely nobody, the show took the tagline “gamers are terrorists” literally and the episode featured some seriously terrorist-like gamers. As a realistic adaptation of the scandal would make a boring episode of people writing angry tweets to each other for days. PCMag did a wonderful summary of the episode with all its forced dialogue and video game pun glory. If you don’t feel like watching the whole episode yourself, then check it out [...]
