Modders Remove Russia-only limit on Halo Online

Halo is a series that despite being published by the PC goliath Microsoft — has maintained a strong presence on Xbox yet comes to the PC market kicking and screaming. Halo: Combat Evolved took an entire two years before it was ported to PC, and it’s successor Halo 2 had its port come at a timely three years after the initial console launch on the PC platform. For over a decade, Halo PC gamers have been very patient when it comes to waiting for the title to make their way to the platform. Recently the newest title to be released Halo Online, a multiplayer-only modified version of Halo 3 designed to run smoother on low-end PCs made some waves in the fandom due to its region-lock. However some modders are not so patient waiting for an official world release, and YouTuber Rookietastic has posted a video describing how to install a fan port of Halo Online

Modders through the use of the social gaming platform Evolve have successfully created a fan port of the Russia-only title on the PC platform. Gamers who are looking to explore the classic title or those who wish to revisit the experience using a mouse and keyboard now have the option according to Rookietastic’s tutorial. Additionally, Rookietastic claims this port is actually kosher with Microsoft’s terms of use citing “Halo Online @ Microsoft Corporation. This mod was created under Microsoft’s “Game Content Usage Rules” using assets from Halo Online, and it is not endorsed or affiliated with Microsoft.”

Despite Microsoft’s wishes to keep this locked to Russia only it appears nothing can keep industrious gamers from the games they want to play.
