Nintendo Gets Swappable Handheld Button Patent

A patent Nintendo filed concerning swappable handheld buttons was published today. A user by the name of Disorientagtor posted the details of the patent on the NeoGaf forums. Check out one of the options the patent focuses on below:

Looking at the pictures from the patent, you can see that Nintendo is toying with the idea of being able to play a game with dual analog sticks or three button configurations. One could also assume Nintendo could be appealing to those gamers who want to have a little variety and color on their handhelds.

Although swappable buttons and analog sticks might seem cool, don’t get too excited. A patent is just what it is, a patent. Having something using this idea hit the assembly line could never happen. Sometimes companies file patents just to keep other companies from doing so, or just to protect an idea.

How would you feel about being able customize your Nintendo handheld?
