There have been a few rumblings over the past few weeks over at the Naughty Dog headquarters leading some to believe that The Last Of Us 2 is likely already well into production. This was unofficially confirmed last night during a live stream for the upcoming release of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, writer for TLOU Josh Scherr referred to the original game as “The First Last Of Us” after which he pointed out that he shouldn’t have said that. While this isn’t an official confirmation or statement, it may as well be.
Alongside this slip of the tongue, there have also been other hints and clues towards a new title. One of them being a tweet by Merle Dandrich, the voice actor for Marlene, in which she shows herself fully mocapped. The director of The Last of Us then retweeted the photo, further adding to rumors that they are once again working together.
To add even more fire to the flame Troy Baker (Joel) and Ashley Johnson (Ellie) uploaded a video on Twitter in which they are reciting each others lines from a TLOU scene. It might just be that they just happened to be hanging out, but with all the other stuff that’s happened it’s pretty unlikely. Due to Twitter being a pain I wasn’t able to properly embed the video so here’s a screenshot with a link to the tweet so you can watch it! Tweet/Video
It is clear that The Last Of Us 2 is in production, and that Joel, Ellie and Marlene will at least be playing some form of a role in the game. I was personally hoping for a new set of characters, as the universe in which The Last Of Us takes place is awesome. Regardless of this I trust Naughty Dog to do the story, the universe and the fans justice. Expect to hear an announcement on The Last Of Us 2 over the next few months, although it could be 2016 before we hear anything.
