After a week long countdown on their official site, Square Enix revealed that the latest game in the long running Star Ocean series would be coming to the PS3 and PS4 sometime in the near future. It is being developed by Tri-Ace—the company responsible for every Star Ocean game since the franchises inception in 1996. The game is reported to be 30% complete as of press release time and will be subtitled “Integrity and Faithlessness.” Art will be handled by Akiman, who is best known for work he produced for Capcom between the mid 80s and 2003. He will be handling character design and artwork.
Like past entries in the series, Star Ocean 5 will feature a real-time battle system — similar to that of the Tales of… series. Character’s attacks are altered depending on their distance from the enemy. Details concerning the game’s story are scarce at the moment, though from past entries it is very likely that Star Ocean 5 will feature a mixture of science fiction and fantasy elements. The announcement did feature several screen shots of the game’s main cast, which includes blue-clad hero Fidel Camus, his childhood friend Miki, and the mysterious little girl Lilia.
“The depths of space forbid peace for mankind—
Centuries after leaving Earth, after a multitude of trials, with the creation and spread of the ‘Galactic Federation’, humanity was on the verge of unified order and peace.
But the embers of conflict have begun to burn again.
Over 6,000 light years from Earth, on the unsettled planet, ‘Faicreed.’
Just as so many times before, the waves of history begin from a remote planet.”
Star Ocean last appeared on home consoles in 2009 with the release of Star Ocean: The Last Hope for the Xbox 360, which was later re-released for the PS3 as an “International Edition” that included alternate character portraits and mild gameplay re-balancing.
